Deniz Say
Deniz Say (b. 1980, Zonguldak, Turkey) is a contemporary mixed-media artist based in Istanbul. Though deeply drawn to art since childhood, Say initially pursued studies in International Trade at Boğaziçi University, graduating in 2002. After a period in the corporate sector, she returned to her lifelong passion, refining her practice under the tutelage of notable artists Altan Çelem and Güneş Özmen, alongside rigorous studies in art history.
Say’s distinctive practice is defined by an expressionist manipulation of earthly and discarded materials. Stripping everyday manufactured objects of their original functions, she isolates them to construct complex textures and dense, multi-layered surfaces. Blended dynamically with heavy paint layers, these "waste" items achieve an organic integrity over time. Her heavily textured canvases function as physical archives of human experience, memory, and the passage of time. Since her debut solo exhibition The Ones I Saved in 2015, Say has exhibited widely across international platforms, including solo and group presentations in London, Paris, Lisbon, Milan, and Istanbul.
