Kerry James Marshall

Kerry James Marshall is an American painter, printmaker, and sculptor recognised for foregrounding Black subjects in contemporary art, transforming the narrative of Western painting to centre experiences historically omitted from the canon. Early Years & Background Born in Birmingham at the outset of the American Civil Rights movement, Marshall’s family moved to Los Angeles during his childhood—a relocation shaped by the Great Migration and the upheaval of the Watts neighbourhood before and after the 1965 Watts riots. Marshall studied at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, where he received a BFA in 1978, and later an honorary doctorate in 1999. Influenced by social realist Charles White, Marshall honed his distinctive practice—rooted in a deep sense of social responsibility and the lived realities of African American communities. He is currently based in Chicago, Illinois. Kerry James Marshall Artworks Kerry James Marshall’s paintings, often monumental in scale, reimagine the grand tradition of Western figurative art by boldly inserting Black bodies, histories, and everyday life into its visual archive. His practice ranges from acrylic paintings and drawings to public sculpture and installations, synthesising realism, abstraction, and collage. Key themes include historical memory, popular culture, the visibility of Black identity, and the complexity of representation in both public and private spheres.
